Exclusive safari: Interview with a Masai

Adventure trip with luxury beach stay - 9 days from € 3,936

Combine your unique cultural Masai experience with one of Kenya's most hidden beach treasures. Every day is different here. Experience the African savannah of the animal-rich Masai Mara in an impressive way. It is simply amazing to listen to a Masai Chief's thoughts on how to deal with nature and its challenges.

It happens that they defend their livestock to protect their wealth, the opponent is not a human, no, it is a lion. Dealing with a situation we would never dare is fearless and alienating. Listen when the Masai talk about commitment and strength, even if your counterpart seems much stronger. Learn more about their attitude, their willingness to survive and their passion to win.

After your safari we will fly you to the tropical coast - a small gem awaits you here, discreet, private and the perfect place to unwind and relax. You will be served fresh seafood and Italian specialties every day, and a lot of emphasis is placed on healthy eating here. Enjoy the seclusion and relax in the utmost privacy and understated luxury.

Travel information about Kenya

Entry, security, food & co.

Entry requirements

Visa Kenya:

A tourist visa is required. It can be applied for online after registering on the website www.ecitizen.go.ke. The cost of the eVisa is US$ 50 per person (plus a processing fee of US$ 1 per person), payable by credit card. Children under the age of 16 have been exempt from the visa fee since February 2016. The visa can be applied for at the earliest 90 days before departure, i.e. entry must take place within 90 days of the visa being issued. The visa is valid for 90 days after entry. The processing time for the eVisa can take up to approx. 7 days. However, visas are currently usually processed within 24 hours. To apply, you will need a digital passport photo, a scan of your passport and a booking confirmation. After approval, you will find the eVisa in the download area of the above-mentioned website. It must be presented on arrival as a printout together with your passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months. As an alternative to obtaining the visa via the website, you can apply for the visa via the Bonn Visa Service (costs approx. € 75 to € 80). Due to teething problems following the introduction of the eVisa, it will still be possible to obtain visas at the airport and in advance via the embassy for the time being. As this may change at short notice, we recommend applying for the eVisa via the above-mentioned website or contacting our SafariGuru experts.

Banks & Currency

Currency :

The Kenyan shilling is the Kenyan currency and is divided into 100 cents. Banknotes are available in 1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50 Ksh bills. Coins are available in denominations of 40, 20, 10, 5 and 1 Ksh.

Foreign currencies can be exchanged at major banks, bureaux de change or authorized hotels. The banks at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Moi International Airport have 24-hour bureaux de change. The easiest currencies to trade are US dollars, pounds sterling, Swiss francs or euros.

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts of USD 5,000 or more must be declared.

Banks and payment transactions

Banks are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays until 12:00. Banks in Mombasa and the coastal areas usually open half an hour earlier.

Credit cards are widely accepted in all major hotels and upscale establishments, with Mastercard and Visa being the most popular. American Express and Diners Club cards are occasionally accepted. Despite all this, you will also need cash on site, as smaller stores only accept cash.

Almost every bank now has an ATM and new ones are constantly being installed at petrol stations in towns and large settlements.

Traveler’s checks are no longer accepted in Kenya.

Travel in the country

Nairobi has two airports for domestic and regional flights: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport (www.kaa.go.ke). Kenya has over 150 domestic airports and airstrips, with daily flights to popular destinations. In addition to the scheduled airlines, several private charter companies operate from Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Kenya Airways (www.kenya-airways.com), Air Kenya (www.airkenya.com), Fly 540 (www.fly540.com), Mombasa Air Safari (www.mombasaairsafari.com) and Safarilink (www.flysafarilink.com ) serve the most popular safari destinations, but also many others, such as Lake Victoria.

On smaller, domestic flights, baggage is limited to 10-15 kg (22-33 pounds). Africa220 can safely store your excess baggage during a safari.

Main roads between large cities and small towns are generally in good condition and can also be easily driven on in a normal car. In the south, the highways are paved, but this is not the case in the north. Left-hand traffic applies.

Most of the smaller gravel roads have deep potholes, which deteriorate further in the rainy season. In the parks, the roads are pristine, often bumpy and never paved.

Nairobi and Mombasa have efficient local bus systems and also many matatus (minibuses). However, reckless driving and minor thefts make it a rather dicey option for tourists. The newer cab fleets (usually painted white with a yellow band) are reliable and have taximeters.

Health and medical information

The healthcare system in Kenya is advanced. Every district has both public and private hospitals and clinics. Visitors who have contracted yellow fever and cholera must have a valid vaccination certificate. Please remember to be vaccinated if you are traveling to several places in Africa. Malaria is rare in the highlands, but widespread in the hot and humid high-altitude areas around the coast, lakes and meadows. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended, most of which must be taken weeks in advance, during your stay and even after your return. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about this.

We advise you to use an insect repellent.

While swimming in the sea and swimming pools is safe, lakes, rivers and open reservoirs can be infested with schistosomiasis parasites. The water in these places should not be drunk. Bottled water is recommended. We recommend that you take out evacuation cover and comprehensive travel insurance.

Safety instructions

Take normal precautions as you would in other countries around the world. Keep a close eye on your handbags, wallets and cameras at all times. Avoid walking at night and use reliable cabs recommended by hotels. Use the hotel or lodge safe boxes for your valuables and only carry as much cash as you need. If at all, wear as little jewelry as possible and never leave valuables in hotel rooms or in an unattended vehicle. Overall, however, Kenya is a safe African country.

Information on food and nutrition

Nairobi offers some of the best restaurants in Africa. From fast food to upscale modern cuisine, there are many different cuisines and restaurants on offer. Many five-star hotels have excellent restaurants. Restaurants are called "hotels" and there are many of them in Nairobi.

It is well worth trying the local dishes, such as pilau, a chicken and rice dish, cabbage and rice and the staple food Kenya ugali, which is made from maize flour.

Many restaurants are located in the city center and in the Westlands and Hurlingham areas, which are heavily frequented by tourists. Among the many cuisines are Indian, Brazilian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, German and French restaurants. Fast food restaurants, mainly from the South African chains (Steers or Nandos), are common in the larger urban areas.

Bottled water is advisable for the first few weeks of your stay. When buying bottled water, make sure that the bottle is sealed. Never drink tap water unless it has been boiled, filtered or chemically disinfected (e.g. with iodine tablets). Never drink from streams, rivers and lakes and avoid drinking from pumps or wells. Although some offer pure water, it may have been contaminated by animals. Except in upscale hotels and restaurants, you should avoid ice cubes, washed vegetables or fruit. Milk is pasteurized and dairy products are safe for consumption. Food from unlicensed suppliers should be avoided at all times.

Climate and weather

Kenya is located on the equator and has a pleasant tropical climate, although there are temperature fluctuations depending on the location, which are triggered by several factors such as altitude. Temperatures fluctuate by around 6°C per 1000m altitude. Kenya's daytime temperatures range between 20°C and 28°C, with the coast being warmer. The coast is hot and humid all year round, but the heat is pleasant and moderated by the monsoon winds. Kenya is too close to the equator to experience a proper winter and summer.

Clothing recommendation

Comfortable, light and casual clothing is the best choice for a safari. In the early morning hours it can get quite chilly, so you should dress warmer for the time until the air warms up in the sun. "Kenya Convertibles are khaki pants with zip-off legs and are perfect for cool early morning game drives. Walking shorts, long pants, cotton shirts and T-shirts are just right. A cotton bush jacket or windbreaker is useful, as is a warm sweater or fleece jacket on cool nights. Headgear should also be standard.

Most safaris do not have many walking or hiking routes, so a comfortable pair of walking or tennis shoes and a pair of sandals should be sufficient.

Kenya's big cities have a conservative but not overly formal dress code. Jeans and appropriate tops are fine for women. Swimsuits are acceptable on the beach, but in public places you should keep a low profile.

Power supply and sockets

The mains voltage in Kenya is 240 volts alternating current at 50 hertz. An adapter is necessary. Some camps and lodges switch off the power overnight
