The Samburu region is an oasis among the protected areas of northern Kenya.
The three national reserves of Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba form an ecological unit in the drylands north of Mount Kenya. The lifeline of the area is the Uaso Nyiro River, where many animals congregate, especially in the dry season. The rugged landscape with rocky, partly volcanic hills and the backdrop of the mighty granite peak of Mount Ol Lolokwe exerts a great fascination on the visitor. The area is one of the most scenically impressive protected areas in Kenya.
The area is home to huge herds of elephants, which still follow their old migration routes through the almost deserted north of Kenya almost unhindered. The wildlife of northern Kenya differs in many ways from the species in the south of the country: The rare Grevy's zebra, the reticulated giraffe, the gerenuk and the oryx antelopes are character species of this region. Among the bird species of northern Kenya, the Somali ostrich, which can be recognized by its bluish neck, and the vulture guinea fowl are particularly noteworthy.
The Samburu people, who live in this region, are historically and culturally closely linked to the Maasai. Just like the Maasai, the Samburu still live according to their ancient traditions. A visit to a Samburu village should therefore not be missed.
