Meru National Park lies to the east of Mount Kenya at the foot of the Nyambeni Hills, which are over 2500 meters high.
In the south-east, the park is criss-crossed by many small watercourses and borders Kenya's longest river, the Tana River. Insiders consider Meru to be an insider tip among the most beautiful protected areas in Kenya.
In Meru National Park, the wildlife of northern Kenya overlaps with that of southern Kenya: Meru is the southern border of the range of the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra or Somali ostrich and at the same time the northern border for Kongoni hartebeest or the tiny Kirk's dik-dik. Due to the sometimes lush vegetation, the animals are not quite as easy to spot as in other parks. However, the pristine nature of Meru is what makes it so fascinating.
In the 1960s, George and Joy Adamson released their reared lioness Elsa into the wild here. Joy Adamson's book, "Born Free", which was later made into a movie, also made Meru National Park famous. In the 1980s, to its great misfortune, the park was ravaged by gangs of poachers who, among other things, completely wiped out Meru's famous rhino population. As a result, the park was avoided by tourists for a long time. At the end of the 1990s, however, poaching in Meru was successfully stopped and tourist numbers have been steadily increasing ever since. Since 2002, the white rhino has even been reintroduced here.
