Amboseli National Park is famous for its large animals - especially its large herds of elephants - and for its varied landscape. The 392 km² national park is home to five different habitat types and a mostly dry lake, Lake Amboseli. The different types of landscape include open savannah, sparse acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush and lush green marshland. On the western edge of the reserve is the Ol Doinyo Orok with an altitude of over 2760 meters.
Towering over the whole area, across the Tanzanian border, is the majestic Kilimanjaro with its snow-capped peak. As one of the most visited parks in Kenya, Amboseli has a selection of excellent accommodation.
Most of the animals can be seen in the east of the national park: Elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, Masai giraffes and buffalo, for example. Zebras, elands, wildebeests, waterbucks, Thomson's and Grant's gazelles as well as impalas are also regularly observed. The black rhino has unfortunately become rare. In the dry bush in the direction of Namanga there are some special ungulates to be discovered, namely the gerenuk and the oryx. The smaller species found in Amboseli include vervet monkeys, steppe baboons, black-backed jackals, spotted hyenas and bat-eared foxes, which can often be seen sunbathing in front of their dens. The birdlife is also impressive: a number of waterbird species can be found in the Amboseli wetlands in particular.
