Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo National Park consists of the western and eastern parts of the nature reserve and covers a total area of 20,000 km².
Tsavo gained dubious fame back in 1900 during the construction of the Uganda Railway: many workers were killed by the man-eating lions, the "Maneaters of Tsavo". The Railway Museum in Nairobi still has a carriage on display from which the beasts once pulled out one of their victims. During the Second World War, however, Tsavo was the scene of several clashes between German and British troops.
The eye wanders over a fascinating expanse of landscape, over mountains, gallery forests, open steppes, lakes and grasslands interspersed with trees. The vast plains of Tsavo stretch all the way to the Tanzanian border. In some places it is possible to leave the vehicle and roam the landscape on foot along designated paths. The guided hike along solidified lava flows to the Chaimu Crater is a particularly exciting experience. A visit to the Mzima Springs is also a must: These crystal-clear spring ponds are home to a variety of fish and mighty hippos. You can observe them from unique perspectives at a glassed-in underwater hide.
The 11,747 km² Tsavo East National Park is not only one of the oldest but also the largest protected area in Kenya: its area accounts for 40% of the total area of all Kenyan national parks. It is a popular safari destination due to its beautiful landscape and proximity to the coast. Scrubby grasslands give way to open grasslands, acacia scrub and dry forests. Along the riverbanks, lush vegetation provides variety. The absolute wilderness begins north of the Galana River. Some operators conduct special safaris in these areas, even camel safaris are offered here. There is one lodge, four tented camps, eleven campsites and a complex with self-catering banda accommodation in the national park.
With its breathtaking landscapes, Tsavo East is a rewarding destination for photographers: Mudanda Rock and the views of the Yatta Plateau, the longest cooled lava flow in the world, are particularly worth a trip. The Lugards Falls on the Galana River are famous for their bizarre rock formations carved out by the flowing water. Tsavo's wildlife includes elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, crocodiles, waterbucks, kudus, giraffe gazelles and zebras. The largest elephant herds in Kenya live here in Tsavo. The red soil of Tsavo, whose dust the elephants use for grooming, gives them a reddish glow.
Tsavo East and Tsavo West are particularly important safari destinations for vacationers on Kenya's coast due to their relatively short accessibility.
