Ovamboland is different from the rest of Namibia. It comprises an environment that allows for crop cultivation and therefore has a significantly higher population, with in fact more than half of the country's population living in this unique part of Namibia. The landscape is mostly flat and monotonous with scattered small settlements and when the rains are good, Owamboland is covered with large pans. Most Ovambo are small-scale farmers who work the poor soil by hand. Oshakati is the largest town in the region and to the south is the Etosha National Park, which is accessible via the King Nehale Gate. Apart from farming, the people here make a living from selling their local artwork such as intricately woven baskets, pottery, beautiful jewelry and wood carvings of animals.
