Etosha National Park
Etosha National Park is Namibia's premier game viewing experience in the northwest of Namibia, an area renowned for its wildlife. The vegetation ranges from dense bushes to open spaces that attract a variety of wildlife. At the heart of the park is the Etosha Pan - a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000sq kilometers. Dry and shimmering for most of the year, the pans fill with water after good rains, rarely more than a meter deep. In the dry season, wild life is drawn to the inter-seasonal springs and waterholes, making for an excellent spectacle. There are three large public recreation camps within the park, catering to travelers on a higher budget. There are several smaller establishments on the outskirts of the park on private land that can provide a more comprehensive and intimate experience, all of which offer excellent value for money.
Like all the national parks in Namibia, Etosha Park has opening hours from sunrise to sunset. The exact times are displayed at the gates in the form of a large clock. Return to camp by sunset as this is when the gates close to keep wild animals away. Anyone staying outside the park must leave by then at the latest. However, the daily entrance fee must be paid at the nearest camp reception beforehand. The receipt must be presented at the exit gate.
