We leave Windhoek and drive via Rehoboth, a small community that still lives according to the laws of its forefathers from 1872, to the Kalahari Desert. Strictly speaking, the Kalahari is not actually a desert, as it receives too much rain. It is the vast expanses of sand, through which rainfall falls rapidly and leaves not a drop on the surface, that turn the Kalahari into the "thirsty land" described by early European settlers. Before dinner, enjoy a sunset drive in an open safari vehicle through a charming landscape.

After breakfast, drive through the Kalahari region to visit the quiver tree forest near Keetmanshoop. The forest, a national monument of Namibia, consists of about 250 Aloe specimens (Aloe dichotoma). The San (Bushmen) used to make quivers for their arrows from the hollow "branches". After a short stop in Keetmanshoop with lunch en route (own expense), visit the Naute Dam, Namibia's third largest dam. Take a short walk to a nearby mountain and enjoy a free drink while watching the sunset.

This morning we drive to the spectacular Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. The huge 160km long gorge is up to 27km wide and 550m deep in places. Continue to Aus with lunch en route (own expense). On the way you may be lucky enough to see the wild horses of the Namib, which are irresistibly fascinating as they have adapted to the harsh desert. Enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Aus Mountains on an (unaccompanied) walk and a sundowner drive at sunset (own expense).

Today starts very early to explore the spectacular huge dunes of Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, another dry clay pan. Where water once flowed, today only tree skeletons protrude from the cracked earth. Enjoy a drive in open 4×4 off-road vehicles into the heart of the Namib Desert. You will visit the Sesriem Canyon, where you can see sediment deposits dating back millions of years in the walls of the gorge. The view from the top is breathtaking, while a walk through the canyon reveals geological layers deposited over centuries. Continue along the imposing Namib Naukluft Mountains to our lodge.

Day 6:

After breakfast, continue through the Kuiseb Canyon to Walvis Bay, Namibia's largest trading port. Opportunity for lunch in Walvis Bay (own expense). The Walvis Bay Lagoon, with its rich and diverse birdlife, is one of the richest and most important wetlands in Southern Africa. Continue to Swakopmund, which is reminiscent of a small German town, with beach promenades, restaurants, cafés and museums. Participate in a sundowner drive to the "Moon Valley", a barren, undulating rocky desert formed from the valleys of the Swakop River. Enjoy your free drink as you take in the rugged beauty of this moon-like landscape.

Day 7:

Discover the picturesque old town of Swakopmund on your own. There is a lot to see here, for example the aquarium, several museums or the Crystal Gallery (entrance fees at your own expense). If you wish, you can also book one of the optional excursions (at your own expense): a guided tour through the Mondesa Township, quad biking, sand boarding, a flight over the Skeleton Coast or a catamaran trip in Walvis Bay.

Day 8:

Another day to enjoy the many attractions of Swakopmund. It is possible that you will meet other guests joining the tour in Swakopmund at dinner tonight.

Day 9:

Depart early in the morning and drive along the salt road, past salt pans and a variety of birds, towards Henties Bay and on to Damaraland, one of the most scenic areas in Namibia. Visit Twyfelfontein, site of ancient rock engravings and the "Organ Pipes", a series of basalt columns that have been exposed by erosion over centuries. Arrival at your lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 10:

The morning is free to relax at the lodge until lunchtime. In the afternoon we take part in a sunset drive into the Aba Huab River valley, where with a bit of luck we may encounter desert elephants (seasonal). These elephants are not actually a special species, but African elephants that have made the Namib and Sahara deserts their home. Once widespread, they are now only found in Namibia and Mali.

Day 11:

After breakfast we leave Damaraland and travel to Etosha National Park. We visit a Damara village near Twyfelfontein, where you will learn more about the culture and traditions of this semi-nomadic people. Continue to the small town of Outjo for lunch (own expense). It is possible that you will meet other guests who are joining the trip here. Arrival at our lodge in the immediate vicinity of Etosha National Park in the early afternoon and first game drive in a closed vehicle into the park.

Day 12:

We spend the morning game viewing (in a closed vehicle) in Etosha National Park. We explore the waterholes along the huge salt pan. Return to the lodge for lunch (own expense). In the afternoon another opportunity for a game drive (in a closed vehicle) in the Etosha National Park. Almost 114 different species of mammals live in Etosha, including the rare black-faced impala and the endangered black and white rhino. The Etosha Pan (a shallow calcareous depression) only contains water after particularly good rains and sometimes only for a few days a year. But it is enough to stimulate the growth of blue-green algae, which attracts thousands of flamingos.
