The Republic of Namibia is located in southwest Africa. Namibia has a population of about 2.1 million inhabitants and an area of 824,292 km²; about 4 inhabitants per square kilometer. After Mongolia, Namibia is considered the most sparsely populated independent country in the world. The population is concentrated in a few cities and the fertile north of the country. Around 44 percent of the population live in the central north of the country. A third live in central Namibia, with more than 400,000 people residing in Windhoek alone. Just seven percent of the population live in the south of the country, while the west and the Namib Desert are almost deserted, with the exception of the port cities. Around 57 percent of the population live in rural areas. The country also has one of the best medical systems on the African continent. In 2004, Namibia had 30 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants, making it one of the best doctor-to-population ratios in Africa.
Namibia is one of the most fascinating and diverse countries to visit and is famous for the sand dunes at Sossusvlei, some of which are the highest in the world, and Etosha National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in the world.
The country has a stable parliamentary democracy. The Namibian economy is strongly characterized by agriculture, tourism and mining, especially of marble, granite, diamonds, uranium, copper, gold, silver and other metals. The largest employer in Namibia is agriculture and mining. The fastest growing sector is tourism.
Namibia's average climate can be described as hot and dry. The largely arid climate is subtropical continental, with relatively large differences between the individual parts of the country.
