We leave Windhoek and drive via Rehoboth, a small community that still lives according to the laws of its forefathers from 1872, to the Kalahari Desert. Strictly speaking, the Kalahari is not actually a desert, as it receives too much rain. It is the vast expanses of sand, through which rainfall falls rapidly and leaves not a drop on the surface, that turn the Kalahari into the "thirsty land" described by early European settlers. Before dinner, enjoy a sunset drive in an open safari vehicle through a charming landscape.

After breakfast, drive through the Kalahari region to visit the quiver tree forest near Keetmanshoop. The forest, a national monument of Namibia, consists of about 250 Aloe specimens (Aloe dichotoma). The San (Bushmen) used to make quivers for their arrows from the hollow "branches". After a short stop in Keetmanshoop with lunch en route (own expense), visit the Naute Dam, Namibia's third largest dam. Take a short walk to a nearby mountain and enjoy a free drink while watching the sunset.

This morning we drive to the spectacular Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. The huge 160km long gorge is up to 27km wide and 550m deep in places. Continue to Aus with lunch en route (own expense). On the way you may be lucky enough to see the wild horses of the Namib, which are irresistibly fascinating as they have adapted to the harsh desert. Enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Aus Mountains on an (unaccompanied) walk and a sundowner drive at sunset (own expense).

Today starts very early to explore the spectacular huge dunes of Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, another dry clay pan. Where water once flowed, today only tree skeletons protrude from the cracked earth. Enjoy a drive in open 4×4 off-road vehicles into the heart of the Namib Desert. You will visit the Sesriem Canyon, where you can see sediment deposits dating back millions of years in the walls of the gorge. The view from the top is breathtaking, while a walk through the canyon reveals geological layers deposited over centuries. Continue along the imposing Namib Naukluft Mountains to our lodge.

After breakfast, continue through the Kuiseb Canyon to Walvis Bay, Namibia's largest trading port. Opportunity for lunch in Walvis Bay (own expense). The Walvis Bay Lagoon, with its rich and diverse birdlife, is one of the richest and most important wetlands in Southern Africa. Continue to Swakopmund, which is reminiscent of a small German town, with beach promenades, restaurants, cafés and museums. Participate in a sundowner drive to the "Moon Valley", a barren, undulating rocky desert formed from the valleys of the Swakop River. Enjoy your free drink as you take in the rugged beauty of this moon-like landscape.

Discover the picturesque old town of Swakopmund on your own in the morning. After an early lunch (own expense) continue inland towards Usakos and Karibib. We make a short stop in Okahandja where you can visit the local craft market. The journey ends with arrival in Windhoek in the late afternoon. Alternatively, you can spend two additional nights in Swakopmund and then join the Northern Namibia Odyssey tour.
