This national park is relatively small, but has very different landscapes: There is a tropical groundwater forest at the entrance to the reserve, the freshwater tributary to the lake, which has become a permanent home to a hippopotamus population, and one of the most diverse bird populations in East Africa. You can linger here for hours with binoculars in hand and always discover something new in the vast, fertile marshland along the lake shore, which is completely reserved for the animals.
Small streams and clearings in the acacia forests inside the park are home to numerous species of mammals and birds, and elephants, buffalo and giraffes in particular are present in large numbers. The animals in Lake Manyara National Park are not particularly shy and behave very naturally. You should definitely take the time to observe one of the numerous baboon colonies, which always provide good entertainment.
Of course, the famous tree lions (a population of lions that, unlike their relatives, climb trees to rest) are interesting, but as it can take a long time to find them, the search is often not worthwhile. Manyara offers many worthwhile targets for the nature lover at any time, be it a fish eagle you can almost touch, a bushbuck crossing a clearing or a monitor lizard enjoying a termite meal.
