Selous Game Reserve
At around 52,000 km², the Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in Africa and the second largest in the world. Together with the neighboring Mikumi and Udzungwa Parks, the Selous Game Reserve forms a huge eco-system twice the size of Switzerland.
More than three quarters of the park is covered by dense Miombo dry forest, which presents a dazzling display of colorful leaves from June to September. The color spectrum ranges from red and purple to the final green leaves. In the northern areas, grasslands and marshlands dominate the scenery, which is broken up by impressive baobabs and acacia trees. Doum and borassus plams, which can grow up to 30 meters high, and mango trees can also be found in well-watered areas.
In addition to lions, giraffes, zebras, baboons, impalas and some rhinos, the Selous is home to the largest elephant population in the whole of Tanzania (around 66,000 animals).
