Tarangire National Park, with its very own character, is an ideal starting or ending point for a safari in the Serengeti. You can go on extended game drives here to observe the animals without feeling like you're just a few traffic lights away from normal everyday traffic! A visit is really worthwhile. The dry months from July to October are particularly interesting. At this time, many animals can be found in the immediate vicinity of the Tarangire River. Here you can really see groups of animals that correspond to the common image of Africa.
Elephants! A few years ago they were common in almost every protected area in East Africa, but now they have become much rarer and are therefore a special attraction. Tarangire is sometimes home to very large herds that pass through here from the Masai Mara steppe. Even if you should keep a respectful distance from the gray giants, because you never know whether they have had bad experiences with cars, these are moments you will never forget.
Of course, a national park with such a varied landscape and such a wealth of plants - especially the impressive baobabs - is also a birdwatcher's paradise. It is impossible to see them all in a short space of time, but in the car on the road you are sure to come across the flame-headed barbet, the small bee-eater or the fork-tailed roller with its lilac breast. In the morning, between six and seven o'clock, an incredible concert of bird calls can be heard in the park.
On the game drives from the lodges or camps, you should always keep an eye out for the special features of the national park, such as the common waterbuck, the klipspringer or the rock python. Some time ago, leopards were even spotted more often - a wonderful, majestic sight! There is hardly a better habitat for leopards than here. If you go on longer game drives across the ancient steppes of Tarangire, you will come across species that are not normally found on the northern route, such as the oryx antelope and the even rarer lesser kudu.
