The undisputed jewel of this landscape is the 16 x 20 km Ngorongoro Crater with a caldera that is not filled with water. The 600 m deep crater is home to magnificent wildlife. Lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, to name but a few, can be found here in a very confined space. Depending on the time of year, there are between 15,000 and 25,000 animals.
This enormous number of animals in a very small area allows for a large population of lions. Almost every visitor has the opportunity to see lions here, as the crater is one of the most densely populated lion areas in Africa. It is almost impossible not to see the Big Five here.
The crater floor has a variety of landscapes: dense mountain forests, woodlands, grasslands, lakes and swamps. The two main rivers flowing down into the crater are the Munge in the west and the Lerai in the east. There is also the Ngotokitok spring, whose water feeds the swamp area.
On the crater rim is a large stone pyramid erected by the Tanzanian government over the grave of Bernhard and Michael Grzimek.
