Interests and activities
Pick up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to the town of Moshi, commonly known as the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. Evening briefing and equipment check. Overnight stay at the Springland Hotel on a half-board basis.
Transfer to Machame Gate and start the ascent of Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route. After completing the entry formalities, you begin to walk through the mist into the forest on a 4 x 4 trail for about an hour. The trail ends, and continues uphill through the dripping green forest. Trekkers are likely to hear the many exotic birds in the canopy above, and many even see black and white colobus monkeys and Sykes monkeys as they trek along the forest floor. The hike is quite long, though not very steep, it takes 5 to 7 hours of trekking to reach the first camp. Machame Camp is located above the forest zone, in the heather zone. When it is clear, there are views of the rugged Shira Ridge and the peak itself.
MACHAME GATE (5,950 ft./1,815 mt.) ~ MACHAME CAMP (9,850 ft./3,000 m)
Wake up early to a steaming cup of coffee served in your tent, then after breakfast start the steep trail through a savannah of tall grasses and trees of giant heather and erica. The clouds should clear to reveal a fine view of the Western Breach and the glaciers that mark the summit; Uhuru Peak. Skirt large boulders as you enter the moorland characterized by the bizarre lobelia and senecio plants as well as volcanic rocks covered with lichen beards sheltering wild alpine flowers. You will reach the camp after descending a small valley and crossing a stream to then ascend Shira Ridge after a total of 4 to 5 hours of trekking.
MACHAME CAMP ~ SHIRA CAMP (12,600 ft./ 3,840 m)
It's a steady climb over long high desert trails for about 4 hours, and stop for lunch at about 4,420 mt. After lunch, continue to Lava Tower, a 300-foot high volcanic cone that marks an exposed pass at 4,600 mt. In the afternoon, you descend the steep path into the Great Barranco Valley. Barranco Camp is situated on a col (flat area) surrounded on three sides by steep valley walls and the Kibo massif. Hanging glaciers glisten above us in the sunshine, amidst the eerie plant landscape, such as the giant mounds (Senecio Kilimanjari) and the uniquely endemic giant lobelia. The hike takes between 6 and 7 hours.
SHIRA CAMP ~ BARRANCO CAMP (12,950 ft./3,950 m)
The day begins with the ascent of the steep "Barranco Wall", then we hike for 3-4 hours and stop for a hot lunch in the Karanga Valley. In the afternoon we continue steadily uphill. The temperature gets colder and the landscape more sparse as we near Barafu Camp. Barafu Camp is located on a small, exposed plain on a ridge and acts as a base camp from which you will make your summit attempt at midnight. Eat and drink as much as you can before retiring to your tent to rest, recharge your batteries and sleep. The summit awaits you, a real goal - the roof of Africa!
BARRANCO CAMP ~ BARAFU CAMP (15,200 ft./4,630 m)
Descend directly to the gate (2-3 hours) where you will receive your well-deserved climbing certificates. On arrival at the gate you will have lunch and then be transferred back to the base hotel in Moshi where you will have dinner, reflect on your experiences and spend the night.
MWEKA CAMP ~ MWEKA GATE (6,000 ft. /1,830 m)
Overnight stay at the Springland Hotel.
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your journey home or individual extension program.
