Tanzania & zanzibar – the wild east of africa

It’s not often that you book one vacation and get three. In Tanzania, you can: one for the huge migrating herds of animals in the Serengeti World Heritage Site.

A second for Ngorongoro, the „prison crater“ with the highest concentration of predators in Africa. And a third vacation for all those dreams under whispering palm trees on the pre-warmed beaches of Zanzibar. A perfect combination of safari & beach!

The average altitude of the mainland is around 1000m. Several mountains reach heights of more than 2000m; like Mount Kilimanjaro, they are witnesses to an active volcanic past. Kilimanjaro has grown together from three volcanoes. Its highest peak, Kibo (5892m), is unsurpassed by any other mountain in Africa.

Travel information to Tanzania & Zanzibar

Entry, security, food & co.

Entry requirements

Tanzania visa:

A passport (valid for at least 6 months after departure) and a tourist visa are required for entry. The visa can be applied for online before departure. Please use this link:  www.immigration.go.tz

As a rule, you should allow 2-3 weeks for processing. Alternatively, the visa is also available at on arrival in Tanzania at the airport (50 USD, payable in cash on site). A waiting time of approx. 1 hour is to be expected here.

You should always carry your passport with you. However, to avoid any inconvenience if you lose your passport, you should always have a copy with you, kept separately from the original.

Banks & Currency

The Tanzania shilling (Shilingi) is the currency of Tanzania. It replaced the East African Shilling, which was valid before independence in 1964 and until 1966.

One shilling is divided into 100 senti (cents). An amount is shown in the form shilling/senti. If an amount corresponds to zero, a hyphen or an equals sign is placed at this point. (Example: „=/50“ corresponds to 50 senti, „100/=“ corresponds to 100 shillings). Due to inflation, however, senti coins disappeared from payment transactions in the 1990s.

The US dollar is now used as a parallel currency in many areas of the country, especially in those developed for tourism.

Bank opening hours are normally Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 12:30, in the larger cities also until 16:00 – on Saturday from 08:30 to 13:30. The US dollar has developed into a kind of parallel currency in this country. Especially in tourist areas and for payments to government institutions such as customs, immigration or national parks, only US dollars are actually accepted. Payment in US dollars is therefore not a problem at all, and it is quite possible that you will not have to pay in the official local currency at all during your stay in Tanzania. A denomination with small dollar amounts is recommended. It should be noted that no dollar bills minted before the year 2000 can be accepted. An exact reason is not given, they are simply not accepted. It is also possible to take euros with you, but these are generally not accepted as a direct means of payment. In this case, it is necessary to exchange them into the local currency at a bank or exchange office.

Travel in the country

Tanzania is an African country located in the east of the continent directly on the Indian Ocean. It is bordered to the south by the states of Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia, to the north by Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda and to the west by the DR Congo.

If you want to visit nature parks and reserves in Tanzania, you can do so by land or air. The roads in most wilderness areas are in poor condition and unmarked, self-driving is not recommended. We therefore provide you with an experienced driver who also acts as a trained guide. Alternatively, you can reach your destination by small aircraft, safari vehicles and drivers are then provided by the accommodation. Towns are connected by a steady stream of buses and dala-dalas (minibuses).

The local airline Precision Air flies regularly, mostly via Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar, to all capital cities and other important destinations in East Africa.

Left-hand traffic applies in Tanzania.

Health and medical information

Normal vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria and polio should be available. Hepatitis A and B protection and malaria prophylaxis are recommended, please consult your family doctor or a tropical institute. We recommend that you take out international health insurance. Take the most important medication with you from home. Yellow fever is required when entering the country from an infected area (e.g. Kenya). Take your vaccination certificate with you so that you can prove that you have been vaccinated! No vaccination is required for direct flights from Europe; if you are traveling from a country with yellow fever, you must provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination; current information can be found on the website of your Federal Foreign Office.

Safety instructions

Tanzania is a safe country to travel to. With due respect for the population, a safe vacation is always guaranteed. Current safety information can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

Information on food and nutrition

Most camps, lodges or hotels serve local specialties as well as western food, which is usually excellent. In the national parks, the accommodation is often isolated and driving in the dark is restricted, so meals are taken in the lodges and camps. Tap water in Tanzania is generally not safe for consumption, but the camps, lodges and hotels offer bottled drinking water.

Climate and weather

There is no best time to visit the whole country. It depends on which part of the country you want to visit and the focus of your trip (safari with game viewing, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or a beach vacation plus a detour for game viewing).

Northeast with Serengeti – Ngorongoro – Arusha region

The months of June/July to October/November are recommended, as are the months of January to March, which are a very good time to travel both in terms of temperatures and the abundance of animals in the northern national parks. Especially the migration in the northern Serengeti in July / September and January to March on the southern Serengeti plains is considered the absolute high season. This is also the best time to see the larger herds of animals.

Coast

The coastal region has a typical tropical climate with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees and relatively high humidity. The drier period from June to September is recommended. During this time, the humidity is low with mostly blue skies. The hottest time of the year is between October and February, the rainy season between March and May.

Trekking tours in the Kilimanjaro region You can climb Kilimanjaro all year round. From June to early October, it is cool and dry. From around mid-December to March it is relatively warm, although temperatures vary greatly depending on the altitude. It is particularly cold when climbing to the summit and at the summit.

Zanzibar The island of Zanzibar is a year-round destination.

Clothing recommendation

It never gets really cold in Tanzania: light clothing, preferably cotton or linen, is recommended. During the safari, avoid brightly colored clothing, better are beiges, khakis and earth-brown clothing. Safari drives can be long, so it is advisable to wear light, comfortable clothing such as short-sleeved shirts and cotton/linen pants or shorts. Sturdy shoes and socks are required.

The evenings in the national parks can get quite chilly, so long sleeves and pants should be worn. Also remember to wear head protection and sunscreen.

If you are visiting Zanzibar or a coastal town, remember your beachwear – it is always warm. On the beaches and within the confines of the hotels, normal swimwear is acceptable, but nudism is not.

Power supply and sockets

The power supply in Tanzania is 220/240 volts at 50 Hz. Plugs are 3-point square (UK type). Adapters are available at all major airports.
