In the middle of the Aberdares forest and close to the Yasabara waterhole lies The Ark, a building modeled on Noah's Ark.
Staying in this lodge is a real experience. You enter via a drawbridge. Once all the guests for the coming night are "on board", this drawbridge is raised. After dinner in the elegant dining room, you can take the so-called Cat Walk - a wooden walkway - to one of the numerous viewing balconies, which are ideal for observing the game of the Aberdares.
Restaurant, fireplace room, bar and lounge. There are 4 panoramic decks all around the Ark for observing the animals. The decks all have comfortable seating.
There is a good chance of seeing big game at the waterhole, which is illuminated in the evening. The salt pan in particular attracts the animals. There is also an underground lookout.
Before going to bed, you can indicate whether you would like to be woken up with a signal when elephants, rhinos, buffaloes or lions approach the waterhole at night. This is probably not the only reason why coffee or tea is offered in the bar around the clock.
Activities
From above, you can observe the animals at the salt lick and the waterhole. It is exciting to see rhino, elephant or warthog, and with a bit of luck perhaps even a leopard, emerge from the thicket. There are also plenty of predators, including lion, leopard, hyena and serval.
Birdwatchers will be delighted by the numerous species represented: cinnamon-breasted bee-eaters nest in holes along the park trails, the crested eagle - Africa's most powerful bird - lives in the forest where it hunts muskbucks (a tiny antelope smaller than a dikdik), while augur buzzards glide over the moor and Jackson Frankolin chickens, exclusive to Kenya, forage in the Bült grass.
