Mahango Game Reserve is a small park just a short drive south of Popa Falls on the border with Botswana. Popa Falls is a natural stopping point on the long journey between Rundu and Katima Mulilo and is ideal for a break, so Mahango Game Reserve should be considered as an extension to the itinerary. The drive through the park takes about half a day. An off-road vehicle is required to drive the entire circular route. However, there is also a shorter route that can be done in a sedan during the dry season. The wild life and variety of birds to be seen there will reward your efforts. The park has a large number of elephants, as well as a considerable number of rare antelopes. These include the roan and sable antelope, tsessebe and the red lechwe. The park is also home to a number of sitatunga, although these antelopes are very rare and sightings therefore require good luck. The best time to see elephants and antelopes is during the dry season. Part of the park borders the Kavango River, so there is also the possibility of spotting crocodiles. To see hippos, you should book a night game drive, as these animals are nocturnal creatures. The Mahango Game Reserve is an excellent destination for bird watching. The best time of the year for this is during the rainy months from November to February.
There are three different habitats in this place: the Kavango River, the floodplains known as Omurambas, and forests, so that a wide variety of species find a home here.
