Known by the locals as the "City of the Sun", this coastal town is most often used as a base for exploring the Great Reef. Toliara (also known as Tuléar) sits on a broad coastal plain surrounded by towering dunes and beautiful mangrove trees. Toliara is home to some excellent restaurants serving fabulously fresh and tasty local cuisine. The town is characterized by a bohemian, tropical ambience, colonial buildings and dusty alleyways teeming with countless "pousse-pousse". These colorful rickshaws are pulled by local men and are the cheapest and most charming form of transportation. Popular local attractions include: the Arboretum d'Antsokay, an impressive botanical garden with more than 920 plant species, lemurs, radiated tortoises and chameleons. The nearby beach of Ifaty, famous for its crystal clear waters, is home to stretches of golden sand and beautiful diving as well as snorkeling opportunities, and a local market on the waterfront showcases various skillfully made local handicrafts.
