Located in eastern Ethiopia, the historic walled city of Harar once served as a gateway to the spread of Islam in the Horn of Africa, as it was the center of trade between the Middle East, India and Africa. This holy Muslim city is located on a vast plateau surrounded by deserts and savannahs. It is said to be the fourth holiest city in Islam and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With over 80 different mosques and 100 shrines dotted around the city, as well as its extraordinary architecture with a mix of African and Islamic influences, Harar is renowned for its ancient cultural heritage. Meander through the bustling, maze-like streets lined with colorful market stalls and visit the Awodai Khat market. This area of Ethiopia is the world's largest producer of the shrub.
