Travelers Rest
The Travellers Rest Hotel is located just outside Kisoro, in the far south-western corner of Uganda on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The hotel is built in colonial style and was completely renovated in 1999. It has 12 rooms and offers a cozy environment to relax after gorilla tours or day trips to the surrounding volcanoes and forests. The landscaped gardens are a haven for many species of birds, which can be viewed from the terrace with the sweet scent of honeysuckle drifting overhead. In the evenings, when it gets cooler, guests gather by the fireplace or in the lounge. Even from a distance, the huge cones of the Virunga volcanoes dominate the landscape and beckon as you approach. The surrounding landscape is of astonishing beauty. The volcanic mountains offer spectacular views of the Rift Valley and the emerald-green Lake Mutanda in the distance. In the sixties, the famous American animal rights activist Dian Fossey visited Travellers Rest many times to do paperwork and to relax and meet people. Fossey said of the hotel: "It was my second home."
Dian Fossey was an American zoologist and behavioral scientist who was passionate about researching the behavior and conservation of mountain gorillas.
