The largest lake in Ethiopia is a place of great scenic beauty and of great cultural and historical importance. Of its 37 islands, about 20 islands include ancient churches and monasteries dating back to the 14th century with exquisite frescoes and ancient treasures. Lake Tana is also an excellent birdwatching site with many migratory and endemic species inhabiting wetlands, forests and rocky outcrops in the region.
