Elgon is the oldest and largest single volcano in East Africa and has one of the largest intact craters in the world. The mountain is divided by the border between Uganda and Kenya, with Mount Elgon National Park straddling both countries. The area offers excellent climbing and hiking opportunities on Koitobos, which is the highest peak on the Kenyan side at up to 4200 meters.
