Lalibela
Lalibela is famous for its 11 rock-hewn churches. It takes its name from King Lalibela, who is credited with the construction of these 11 buildings in the 12th century. This creation is the most incredible in the world to have been made by human hands and thus embodies an enduring monument to man's faith in God. Most writers describe these churches as the "eighth wonder of the world". These remarkable structures were hewn from solid rock, with the weathered landscape keeping mass tourism away from the churches. Lalibela is the venue for some of the most famous church festivals in Ethiopia. Visits to the great celebrations of Genna (X-Mas) and Timket (Epiphany) are particularly worthwhile.
