These remarkable structures were hewn from solid rock, with the weathered landscape keeping mass tourism away from the churches. Lalibela is the venue for some of the most famous church festivals in Ethiopia. Visits to the great celebrations of Genna (X-Mas) and Timket (Epiphany) are particularly worthwhile.
