Kisoro
The small town of Kisoro is located near the source of the Virunga volcanoes, not far from Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and is used as a base for excursions to the surrounding mountains, which are among the few places on earth inhabited by mountain gorillas. This area is home to an amazing abundance of wildlife, including 11 different species of primates, lions, leopards, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes and zebras, as well as countless species of birds. Highlights of the area include the Pygmy village, swimming trips or canoeing in the picturesque Lake Mutand as well as hikes to the spectacular Virunga volcanoes. The town itself is home to a local market with a diverse range of goods, from fresh fruit to fabrics. There are also many stores along the main street of Kisoro that are known for their skillfully crafted handicrafts.
